What to pack for a November hike
November is the month for hikers who love quiet: the trails are empty, the air is clear and the days are short. A list of what belongs in your pack, from a head torch to a thermos of hot tea.

- Layers: a base layer that wicks sweat, a warm mid-layer and a jacket that keeps out wind and rain. A hat and gloves, even if the morning feels warm.
- A head torch: in November it gets dark around 4:30 pm. A torch is a must even on short trails, and spare batteries take up no space.
- A thermos of hot tea: half a litre to a litre, depending on the length of the trail. Orange & ginger is lovely in the cold and doesn’t turn bitter even after a few hours. Warm the thermos with boiling water before you set off.
- Food that needs no preparation: dried fruit, nuts, sandwiches. On a break with a cup of tea, everything tastes better.
- A map and a plan: download the route to your phone and tell someone where you are going and when you will be back. Start early and finish before dark.
